The Gosaikunda Lake Trek lies within Langtang National Park and leads to one of Nepal’s most sacred high-altitude lakes, Gosaikunda (4,380 m). This alpine lake system is both a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance and a deeply revered pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists.
This moderate-duration trek (around one week, with optional extensions) offers a powerful combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and spiritual significance. Along the route, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Langtang Lirung, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal ranges, and distant Tibetan peaks.
The journey also includes exploration of the sacred lake system, which consists of Gosaikunda, Saraswati Kunda, and Bhairab Kunda. According to Hindu mythology, Gosaikunda was created by Lord Shiva when he struck the mountain with his trident to obtain water, making it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Nepal.
Each year during Janai Purnima (August full moon festival), thousands of pilgrims visit the lakes, creating a vibrant spiritual atmosphere in the high Himalayas.
The trail itself is diverse and scenic—passing through rhododendron, oak, and pine forests, along ridgelines, river valleys, suspension bridges, and traditional mountain settlements. It offers a strong sense of wilderness while still remaining accessible compared to higher-altitude expeditions.
The Gosaikunda Lake Trek is ideal for travelers who want a meaningful Himalayan experience focused on culture, mythology, and natural beauty, without the extreme altitude challenges of longer high-mountain treks.
