The Tiji Festival is based on an ancient Buddhist myth in which a deity named Dorje Jono defeats destructive forces threatening the Kingdom of Mustang and drives them away to restore harmony and peace. This symbolic “chasing away of evil” is celebrated through elaborate masked dances, sacred rituals, chanting monks, and vibrant ceremonies performed in the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang.

Held according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, the festival usually takes place in May, attracting travelers from around the world who wish to witness this extraordinary cultural event. Experiencing Tiji feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by centuries-old traditions, colorful costumes, spiritual rituals, and the dramatic desert landscapes of Upper Mustang.

The journey itself is equally rewarding. Travelers typically fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara, followed by another scenic mountain flight to Jomsom, where the trek begins.
