This challenging journey passes through the hidden valleys of Nar and Phu, crosses the demanding Teri La Pass (5,595 m / 18,356 ft), and continues into the mystical landscapes of Upper Mustang. Trekkers experience a striking variety of terrain — from alpine forests, rivers, and yak pastures to barren cliffs, deep canyons, and vast desert-like landscapes that closely resemble the Tibetan Plateau.
The trek is considered an expedition-style adventure, with several remote camping sections and daily hikes averaging 6 to 7 hours. Due to the high altitude, long duration, and physically demanding trails, this trek is best suited for trekkers with excellent fitness, previous high-altitude hiking experience, and a strong sense of adventure.
Most days are spent above 3,000 meters, with multiple overnight stays above 4,000 meters, making proper acclimatization essential. Crossing the spectacular Teri La Pass is one of the major highlights of the journey, rewarding trekkers with breathtaking panoramic views of snow-covered Himalayan peaks and remote untouched valleys.
Along the route, trekkers pass through isolated villages where life has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The culture, traditions, monasteries, prayer flags, and daily lifestyle of the local people reflect deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist heritage. One of the cultural highlights is visiting Lo Manthang, the ancient walled capital of Upper Mustang and historic seat of the former Kingdom of Lo.
The trek also offers opportunities to explore mysterious sky caves, ancient monasteries, remote settlements, and some of the most rugged landscapes in Nepal. While certain sections remain completely isolated with only your trekking crew nearby, other parts reconnect with traditional teahouse routes offering more comfort and interaction with fellow trekkers.
